Infant Care

What Are The Care Needs Of An Infant?

They say having a baby changes everything, and that couldn’t be truer. Being a parent is so rewarding, but we also understand that there are so many things to consider when it comes to your child and their health. Our team of pediatricians has been serving the Northern Virginia area for more than 50 years, providing trusted and comprehensive care to infants, young adults, and their families.

Choosing a Pediatrician

Before your child is even born you will already begin the process of choosing a pediatrician. We understand just how important this decision is. This is why we offer a monthly prenatal meet and greets. This allows expectant parents to come into our office and ask our pediatric team any questions they may have about the services we offer. This is the perfect time to get to know our team and friendly staff so you can make an informed decision about the pediatrician that’s right for your family. We want you to feel confident in your decision to place your child’s health in our knowledgeable, caring hands.

When to See a Pediatrician

Your child’s first visit will happen within the first 3-5 days after birth. The first checkup will probably be the longest visit you will have, as our medical team will need to check vital signs, take measurements, perform a physical exam and additional screening tests, and administer immunizations. This first checkup is also just as important for parents, especially new parents. We know you may have questions about feedings, bathing or sleep habits and we are happy to answer any questions and address your concerns.

Routine checkups will occur more often during the first few years of your child’s life. These checkups will allow our pediatric team to be able to track and monitor important cognitive and developmental milestones (e.g. rolling over; sitting up) as your baby continues to grow. After the initial checkup within 3-5 days after birth, all parents should bring their infant in for care at:

  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 24 months

After 24 months, you should continue to bring your child in once a year for a comprehensive checkup. Each of these checkups is vitally important for your child, as they ensure that your child continues to get the proper screenings, tests and immunizations they need to stay healthy. You’ll spend a significant amount of time with your pediatrician during your child’s first two years of life, so it’s important that you find a doctor that you wholeheartedly trust and feel confident turning to at any time.
